Holographic Television – a step nearer?

I recently came across this report on CNN about holographic displays being developed for TV displays:

“The reason for renewed optimism in three-dimensional technology is a breakthrough
in rewritable and erasable holographic systems made earlier this year
by researchers at the University of Arizona.

Dr Nasser
Peyghambarian, chair of photonics and lasers at the university’s
Optical Sciences department, told CNN that scientists have broken a
barrier by making the first updatable three-dimensional displays with
memory.

“This is a prerequisite for any type of moving
holographic technology. The way it works presently is not suitable for
3-D images,” he said.

The researchers produced displays that can be erased and rewritten in a matter of minutes.”

Looks most interesting; I like the idea of working in 3D for many things besides watching entertainment. I’d like to be able to work on 3D spreadsheets, mind maps etc. I shall be a geek into my old old age!

BBC begins UK DVB-T2 test transmissions

BBC begins UK DVB-T2 test transmissions

Interesting snippet from the IBE’s online magazine. The BBC has begun testing HD on Freeview using the latest implementation of the DVB-T standard, DVB-T2.

DVB-T2 offers far greater capacity than its 10 year old predecessor and is an enabling factor for HD services to commence during 2009.

I will be taking  a look at DVB’s showcase at IBC this year.

Hugh is on IBC Radio…

At IBC 2007 I was involved in a discussion programme on IBC Radio talking about technical books.

Two mouth watering subjects – “IPTV & Internet Television” & “Descriptive Metadata for Television” both from Focal Press.

The discussion is at www.radioibc.com

Review of LCD Studio Reference Monitors

Display Daily » Blog Archive » LCD Studio Reference Monitors

Interesting review of some of the LCD Studio Reference Monitors shown in January at the SMPTE meeting in New York.

IBC 2007 is going to be interesting in this area. We should be getting close to some serious monitors for grading use.

I’ve been asked to do a little stand duty for one contender (details to be revealed later). Not sure how much fun working a stand is going to be, but it is a chance to look at the exhibition from a very different perspective.

IBC 2006

I’m in Amsterdam for this year’s exhibition. It’s going to be a busy show for me this year with two projects to research and report on.

I am looking at these general areas of activity:

  1. Delivering video material over IP networks
  2. Digital Asset Management systems & Integration
  3. Film grading technologies
  4. Digital Terrestrial TV technologies

That’s quite a load to absorb over the 4 days!

Welcome to this new blog

Hi, Hugh here!

I have started this blog to separate some of the posts from my general life blog And Another Thing… into a more subject specific area.

Some of the posts here will be direct copies from the other blog, but many more are original here.

I shall be recounting some of my case histories and matters of interest so that you can gain an insight into the work of a digital television specialist and perhaps, get to know me a little better.

I am always delighted to offer a free initial consultancy for an hour either by phone or in person, so whatever your problem or enquirey, please feel free to contact me!
